Understanding Strategy’s Impressive Bitcoin Yield and Future Prospects

Strategy touts 13.7% YTD Bitcoin yield in earnings print

In its May 1 earnings report, Strategy, a tech firm led by Michael Saylot, announced an impressive Bitcoin yield of 13.7% for the year-to-date. This translates to a staggering accumulation of over 61,000 Bitcoin (BTC), valued at approximately $5.8 billion. These metrics—Bitcoin yield and Bitcoin gain—serve as unofficial benchmarks for the company’s BTC acquisition strategy.

Bitcoin yield is calculated by taking the ratio of Strategy’s Bitcoin holdings relative to its MSTR stock’s outstanding shares. Meanwhile, Bitcoin gain quantifies these holdings in terms of accrued Bitcoin. Recently, the company stated its 2025 targets: a ‘BTC Yield’ of 25% and a ‘BTC $ Gain’ of $15 billion, as outlined by CFO Andrew Kang.

In the first quarter of 2025 alone, Strategy achieved a notable Bitcoin yield of 11% and nearly 50,000 BTC in gains, alongside plans to raise an additional $21 billion to fund future Bitcoin acquisitions.

As of May 1, shares of MSTR have risen over 27% year-to-date, hovering around $381, although they remain below November’s peak of over $470 per share. Since commencing its Bitcoin acquisition strategy in 2020, Strategy has amassed over 550,000 BTC, which has cost the company nearly $38 billion—yielding an average purchase price close to $68,500 per Bitcoin. Today, the company’s Bitcoin treasury exceeds $53 billion, indicating substantial value accumulation.

Industry experts speculate that institutional buying, particularly from corporate giants like Strategy, may drive retail investors out of the market. Currently, public companies are said to hold more than $73 billion in Bitcoin collectively, while institutional funds like Bitcoin ETFs manage about $128 billion in assets.

The ongoing strategy shows potential for continued growth in Bitcoin holdings, potentially impacting market dynamics in the future.
