Chen Xiyun, a team member from Unitree, explained that the robots utilize human-machine collaboration. While the robots were pre-taught specific moves, human operators controlled their actions during the matches, bridging the gap between technology and human interaction.

Weighing in at 35 kilograms and standing at 132 centimeters tall, these pint-sized pugilists underwent rigorous training ahead of the competition. They demonstrated a range of kicks and punches to refine the rules of engagement, allowing for a more dynamic competition.

Harnessing AI for Real Combat Movements

During a live broadcast of the event on CCTV, Unitree director Wang Qixin disclosed that AI technology played a pivotal role in teaching the robots to learn combat techniques. The robots were trained using motion capture data from professional fighters, allowing them to replicate realistic movements in a virtual environment.

In a captivating match, a pink headgear-clad robot faced off against one adorned in black. The entertainment value skyrocketed as the robots exchanged punches and kicks, showcasing their agility and precision. The black-helmeted robot initially fell but soon made a comeback, ultimately demonstrating resilience and strategy by securing a victory.

With the competition’s exciting structure—points awarded based on hits to the head and penalties for falls—spectators were treated to a blend of strategy and action. Ultimately, the black robot was crowned champion, triumphing over its green opponent.

Looking ahead, another event featuring full-sized robots is already scheduled for December in Guangdong Province, underscoring the growing popularity and advancement of robotic competitions in the region.
