Semler Scientific Enhances Bitcoin Holdings with $50 Million Acquisition

In a bold move reflecting the growing trend of cryptocurrency investment among publicly traded companies, Semler Scientific, a medical device firm, has recently acquired an impressive $50 million worth of Bitcoin. This significant purchase, made between May 13 and May 22, has elevated the company’s total Bitcoin holdings to a market value of approximately $474.4 million. This positions Semler within the top 13 Bitcoin treasury companies globally.

According to a disclosure released on May 23, Semler purchased a total of 455 Bitcoins at an average price of $109,801. The funds for this acquisition were sourced from an at-the-market stock offering program, where the company has successfully raised net proceeds of $115 million by selling around 3 million shares of common stock.

Despite the substantial increase in Bitcoin holdings, Semler’s shares experienced a slight decline of 1.36% on the same day as the announcement. This decrease, however, aligns with the broader trend observed in the Nasdaq index, which tracks major technology stocks and was down by about 1% on the same day.

In its recently released Q1 2025 earnings report, the company disclosed a concerning 44% year-over-year drop in revenue. Despite the ambitious strategy of accumulating Bitcoin as a treasury asset, Semler’s shares have decreased by 18% in 2025, according to data from Google Finance.

The trend of companies accumulating Bitcoin as part of their treasury strategy has gained traction as investors seek exposure to the volatility and potential upside of cryptocurrency prices. A notable example is Michael Saylor’s approach, which began in August 2020, leading to a surge in Bitcoin’s value of 181.6% year to date. Conversely, Semler Scientific has seen its shares increase by 53% since announcing its BTC acquisition strategy in May 2024.

As Bitcoin continues to rise in popularity, the strategies of companies like Semler Scientific will be closely monitored by investors and industry analysts alike, eager to gauge the impact of such investments on traditional stock performance.
