Navigating the Current Landscape of Bitcoin: A Closer Look at Market Volatility and Maturity

In recent weeks, the cryptocurrency market has faced significant turbulence, characterized by considerable uncertainty and volatility. This instability can largely be attributed to shifting global macroeconomic conditions, resulting in Bitcoin’s price fluctuating between $74,000 and $83,000 within a matter of days.

At the beginning of last week, the price of BTC sank toward $74,000, triggered by panic among investors following U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement of new trade tariffs. However, by Thursday, April 10, the premier cryptocurrency managed to reclaim the $83,000 level after President Trump unexpectedly paused trade tariffs on all countries except China.

Is Bitcoin Now A ‘Mature Asset’?

Bitcoin’s price movements have proven to be remarkably responsive to global trade news, underscoring the ongoing volatility within the cryptocurrency market. Yet, an on-chain analytics expert suggests that the current volatility is comparatively muted when held against historical precedents.

In a recent post on the social media platform X, Julio Moreno, the head of research at CryptoQuant, highlighted that the price volatility observed during the current trade tensions is significantly lower than in previous incidents, including the COVID-19 crash, the collapse of Terra-Luna, the downfall of FTX, and the bank run at Silicon Valley Bank (SVB).

One key metric to consider is the Price Intraweek Range, which measures the percentage change in Bitcoin’s average weekly price. According to data from CryptoQuant, this metric reached an unprecedented high of 72% during the COVID-19 downturn in April 2020.

The aforementioned chart illustrates that the BTC Intraweek Range surged to 49% after the May 2022 crash of the Terra Luna ecosystem. Similarly, this indicator reached 31% following the collapse of the FTX exchange in late 2022 and the SVB bank run early in 2023.

Currently, amid escalating trade tensions between the United States and China, the Bitcoin Price Intraweek Range metric hovers between 8% – 21%. This diminished volatility implies that Bitcoin may be maturing as an asset, benefiting from deeper liquidity and an enhanced market structure.

Furthermore, the relatively stable price action is likely connected to an increasing number of long-term holders and a surge in corporate adoption. As institutional players begin to perceive Bitcoin not merely as a high-risk asset, but as a potential hedge against macroeconomic uncertainties, its positioning in the market continues to evolve.
