FIFA, the global governing body of football, is set to leverage Avalanche’s network for its own dedicated layer-1 blockchain. This development, termed the FIFA Blockchain, represents a significant move into the blockchain ecosystem, utilizing Avalanche’s customizable technology, which is also known as a subnet.
The announcement follows the recent launch of the Avalanche9000 upgrade, aimed at attracting new developers to create tailored layer-1 solutions on the network. This upgrade is pivotal in enhancing Avalanche’s capacity to cater to enterprises looking for efficient and effective blockchain applications.
FIFA’s journey into the blockchain space is not entirely new. In 2022, the organization launched a collection of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) on the Algorand blockchain in conjunction with the Qatar World Cup. In fact, FIFA hinted at this transition back in April, indicating a shift towards an EVM-compatible blockchain while continuing to explore various Web3 initiatives.
The NFT boom, which saw many big players enter the arena, has faced challenges due to the prolonged downturn in the cryptocurrency market. Nonetheless, FIFA’s ongoing commitment to blockchain technology suggests that its potential use cases continue to be relevant and that major organizations are eager to explore opportunities within this space.
“Avalanche is engineered for enterprises and organizations seeking to develop custom, high-performance blockchain solutions,” commented John Nahas, chief business officer at Ava Labs, in a statement shared with CoinDesk. “FIFA’s decision to implement its layer-1 solution on Avalanche underscores our technology’s capability to support large-scale global applications with speed, flexibility, and security.”
Currently, FIFA boasts a World Cup NFT collection alongside a digital collectibles marketplace; however, details regarding future developments on its new blockchain have yet to be disclosed.
