Ethereum developers are making significant strides towards this goal with the introduction of two new token standards: ERC-7930 and ERC-7828. These initiatives aim to streamline cross-chain transactions, thereby enhancing user experience and functionality.

The decentralized finance (DeFi) ecosystem has long faced issues related to inconsistent standards in wallets, applications, and smart contracts. As noted by the development organization Wonderland, the lack of a unified method for interpreting information leads to a fragmented experience that disrupts cross-chain usability.

Wonderland, a coalition of developers, researchers, and data scientists, has partnered with several prominent DeFi protocols—including Optimism, Aztec, Connext, and Yearn—to advance these new standards. Their recent publication outlines the significance of ERC-7930 and ERC-7828 in addressing prevalent interoperability shortcomings.

During a recent call with the Ethereum Foundation’s interoperability working group, discussions revealed that the organization is working towards finalizing these token standards within a short timeframe, with a call for feedback from the community on the ETH-Magicians forum.

“We badly need feedback on the ETH-Magicians forum.”

Wonderland elaborated that ERC-7930 introduces a compact, binary format for interoperable addresses, which is machine-friendly and essential for protocols needing a shared representation across blockchains. Conversely, ERC-7828 aims to provide a human-readable layer, incorporating formats like address@chain to simplify interactions for end users.

The proposed standards also have significant implications for user experience by allowing individuals to specify the target blockchain for their transactions. This functionality encompasses both human-readable and machine-readable formats, thereby minimizing the risk of sending assets to incorrect blockchains—an issue that has led to considerable crypto losses.

Ultimately, with the proposed changes, wallet operations could become blockchain-agnostic, facilitating effortless interactions across various chains without necessitating network switches in user interfaces.

The advancements introduced by ERC-7930 and ERC-7828 promise to propel Ethereum’s ecosystem towards a more interoperable future, ensuring that both application developers and users benefit from a unified, streamlined experience in the decentralized landscape.
